美国之音(以下称VOA)的英语节目,按播音速率可分为两种:Standard English (规范英语)和 Special English(特殊英语)。

Special English 又叫“慢速英语”,是VOA 专为全天下非英语国度初学英语的听众布置的一种浅易、标准的英语播送节目。该节目开创于50年月末期,是VOA 的专家们研讨怎样与天下各地的英语学习者停止外交的产品。它正式开播于1959年10月。事先只面向欧洲和中东,但由于这个节目合适很多国度英语学习者的需求,以是它的播送工具不久就扩展到天下其他地域,并很快在全天下范畴内发生了普遍的影响。如今这个节目对欧洲、非洲和拉丁美洲每晚播送一次,对加勒比地域每晚播送一次(星期天除外),对西北亚播送次数最多,每天上午两次,早晨三次。

30多年来,VOA 为了办妥Special English节目,停止了少量的观察研讨任务,对播音速率、内容及用词范畴都作了详细规则,根本上到达了既能为英语学习者提供信息,又不侵害英语自身作风的目标,使之成为VOA 独具特征,拥有最少量听众的节目。

美国闻名词汇学家S. B. Flexmer 指明白Special English的三条规范,也便是它所“特殊”的中央:



3、它以每分钟90个单词的速率,即2/3的Standard English(规范英语)速率停止播送。

Special English的节目可分为两大类:一类是旧事节目;一类是专题节目。
