美国之音(以下称VOA)的英语节目,按播音速率可分为两种:Standard English (规范英语)和 Special English(特殊英语)。

Special English 又叫“慢速英语”,是VOA 专为全天下非英语国度初学英语的听众布置的一种浅易、标准的英语播送节目。该节目开创于50年月末期,是VOA 的专家们研讨怎样与天下各地的英语学习者停止外交的产品。它正式开播于1959年10月。事先只面向欧洲和中东,但由于这个节目合适很多国度英语学习者的需求,以是它的播送工具不久就扩展到天下其他地域,并很快在全天下范畴内发生了普遍的影响。如今这个节目对欧洲、非洲和拉丁美洲每晚播送一次,对加勒比地域每晚播送一次(星期天除外),对西北亚播送次数最多,每天上午两次,早晨三次。

Words And Their Stories(词语掌故)这一专题节目,旨在向学习英语的听众引见美国英语中生动风趣的词语和习用法,并从迷信研讨和浅显词源学的角度来表明它们的含义、发生的配景及其在运用进程中的演化状况等。它经过讲故事的方式解说每一个词语。这是VOA Special English中的良好节目之一,是学习美国英语的极好资料。经过收听这一节目,听众不只能学到绘声绘色的掌故和隧道的美国英语,并且能添加美国的社会文明配景知识,汗青传统与近况的理解。
